I’ve been not doing as much work as I would like on my boat lately. Other things have beeen getting in the way like work and socialising.
Anyway there is some progress on the deck which I will show. I’ve also taken a couple of photos of the cedar strips to show that fitting them together isn’t as hard as it might look.
I got the cedar strips cut in a bead & cove pattern. As you can see in the picture this allows you to fit them together at varying angles without having to hand fit them.
This picture shows how the strips look at the rear of the deck after they are fitted together.
This pile of matchsticks is what the hull and deck are made from.
The front of the deck has a lot of curves and twists. It is looking a bit messy at the moment!
The strips along the deck. The string is there so that you can pull out the staples easily when you are ready to start the sanding process.
Great pics. I always wondered about how to build a boat from matchsticks.
Thanks tillerman. I looked up your site. There are actually 3 Swift Solos being built in the New York area at the moment.
I’m sure if you were interested in seeing what the matchsticks look like in the flesh, that the guys over there would be happy to show you.
Very neat Steve, Yep thats right Tillerman email Greg@nycskiffs.org if you are inetersted in having a look at the new jersey boats.

Steve -
It’s looking good down there!. Summer here in MI, and out on the Whaler. Still think about that week in May, meeting some great people and boats.

Hi Don,
It was a great week over there. I think I was jet lagged for about 2 weeks after I got home. It was good to meet you - glad to hear you are getting some use out of the whaler.
If we cat some more Swift Solos built over here maybe you can use that as an excuse to come down to Oz for a holiday?
I bet your wife just loves the state of the garage at the moment!!!
Thats why the 59er sailing has taken a back seat for the moment. I need to get this project finished!!
