First Australian Swift Solo

Thinking about rigging it.

Posted on Monday 7 August 2006

I’m a fair way through getting the deck built now. I’ll post some more photos after I’ve got the wings stripped which I’m hoping to have done by the end of this week.

My thoughts are now changing to exactly how I’m going to rig this baby. Our hull is one design but providing you keep to some basic rules about sail area, mast length etc you are free to arrange the rigging as you like.

The boats in the USA are all pretty much rigged alike. I’m going to change a few things on the first Aussie Swift due to 2 main factors:-

  • It is hard and expensive to get some items like spars from overseas
  • I think that it is possible to improve the boat setup in a few areas.

This part of the project is a lot of fun. It is going to be interesting to see how it all works on the first day it is launched at RQ.

    Swift,
just steal the rig off the 59er for the launch day and worry about rigging it properly later… it’s the craftsmanship of the hull and the gleaming wooden goodness that will make peoples jaws drop. I’m sure that between the swift solo and the foiler moth this rq open day will be one to remember.

    Foilalot,
I’d love to have it ready by opening day but it is not going to happen.
I can’t wait to see foiling moths for real on the bay. The singlehanded scene is going to get to be real fun with foiling Moths, Musto Skiffs and Swift Solos all getting into the action.
Ah well back to the garage with the staple gun, glue and cedar………..

You guys have me hooked on this thing. I am currently thinking ways of reducing my “fleet” and how to get a group together for the Solo. Not easy at present but your reports and pictures and all keep hammering the message home. Thanks. Smooth sailing
